BALTWRECK - Preventing massive marine waters chemical pollution from the leaking wrecks and munition/weapon dumps in the South Baltic

 

The Department of Environmental Protection is pleased to announce that the Maritime Institute at the Gdynia Maritime University is a partner in a new project approved under the Interreg South Baltic Programme 2021–2027:

“BALTWRECK” – Preventing massive marine waters chemical pollution from leaking wrecks and munition/weapon dumps in the South Baltic.

This international project will be implemented in cooperation with partners from Poland, Lithuania, Germany, and Sweden. BALTWRECK aims to reduce the level of pollution in the Baltic Sea from shipwrecks, fuel, ammunition and weapons dumps at the seabed. Project activities focus on developing, testing, and implementing modern methods for managing hazards associated with marine wrecks.

Intended project outcomes:

  • Implementation of effective wreck diagnostic methods,
  • Development of remediation technologies for fuels and ammunition found in wrecks,
  • Testing of project solutions at three pilot sites,
  • Analysis of the toxicological risk to marine ecosystems associated with ammunition and hydrocarbon sediments,
  • Development of recommendations for decision makers and local authorities regarding marine environmental protection.

 

Implementation period: July 2024–June 2027

Total project budget: EUR 3,830,000

Funding from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF): EUR 3,064,000

 

The BALTWRECK project aims to improve the safety and quality of Baltic Sea waters through ecological and innovative solutions that address global environmental challenges and contribute to the protection of marine ecosystems.
