USBL Underwater Positioning System

The USBL system includes:

Sonardyne Ranger Pro

The operating range of the Ranger Pro USBL is 6000 m. The system allows tracking of up to ten targets in the water depth, e.g. ROVs, divers, AUVs, or towed gear. The system calculates the position of a given underwater object based on the measurements of distance and angle between a head located on the vessel (r/v IMOR) and the acoustic transponder installed on the object. Such a positioning may be used during underwater inspections, in subsea archaeology, or in surveys of cables and pipelines.

Technical specification:

  • Operation range: > 6,000 m (confirmed)
  • Acoustic coverage: ±90° or ±50° (depending on used transceiver)
  • Tracking: 1 vehicle on the surface and 10 underwater objects
  • Maximum refresh rate: every 1 s, irrespective of the water depth
