Research Areas

The Maritime Institute at the Gdynia Maritime University is the undisputed leader in the Polish offshore market in environmental research and the preparation of environmental, geophysical, geological, and geotechnical documentation for offshore investments, particularly in the offshore energy sector. This applies to both commercial projects and support for public administration bodies in the preparation and implementation of directional formal standards and best practices in marine surveys.

Thanks to the multidisciplinarity of its research departments and laboratories and its participation in projects and other initiatives related to the management of Baltic Sea resources, the Institute has become a centre of competence and knowledge, a hive for processing and evaluating information regarding the needs and priorities of the maritime economy and the use of marine resources, including marine space. The Institute's core activities include scientific research, implementation and experimental activities, encompassing technical, technological, economic, organisational, ecological, and legal issues in the field of maritime economy, adapting survey and development results to the needs of maritime practice and policy, and implementing the results of scientific research and development. Research and development work is carried out for the government, local government, and maritime administration, as well as for enterprises related to the maritime economy and the coastal region.
 

The leading areas of activity of the GMU Maritime Institute include: 

  • innovative research in the field of marine resources and maritime economy, taking into account the need to create a sustainable Baltic Sea space by providing expert knowledge in the planning and management of marine areas, also protected ones,

  • specialised services for maritime enterprises and related sectors, including the energy sector, maritime transport and seaports, maritime tourism, and cultural heritage,

  • research and development projects in the field of environmental protection at sea and on land, as well as marine ecology, including marine fisheries,

  • oceanographic research and analytical services provided using dedicated equipment and research facilities, including research vessels and certified laboratories,

  • expert knowledge in ecology, geology, geotechnical engineering and marine hydrotechnology,

  • implementing artificial intelligence in transport to optimise transport processes and support environmentally friendly modes of transport, particularly sea and river transport,

  • design, maintenance, and management of databases and development of innovative maritime technologies, research and information on safety, monitoring phenomena, and continuous processes,

  • specialised laboratory analyses in the fields of chemistry, biology, and marine geotechnics.

 

The Maritime Institute acquires projects and contracts for consulting, expert, and research services, and also manages ongoing projects. At the same time, it creates and develops international research and development projects utilising national and international programmes and funds, including those from the European Union. For many years, the Maritime Institute has maintained extensive collaboration with domestic and international scientific institutions, conducting joint research projects.
